  25.               Aphelion Computer Bulletin Board System has now 
  26.          connected with the Internet.  The Internet is a worldwide 
  27.          network connecting Universities, Research Centers, Government 
  28.          and Business with electronic mail, news, public message 
  29.          bases, and computer programs.

  31.               This is the first time the Internet has been publicly 
  32.          available in the Fort Smith area.  System Operator of 
  33.          Aphelion BBS, Robert Parson, says "The heart of computing is 
  34.          being able to share information.  Now users in Fort Smith can 
  35.          easily share information with the world and gather 
  36.          information from sources they couldn't reach before."

  39.          anyone wishing to receive private messages.  A rate of $6.00 
  40.          an hour will be charged for all other Internet resources.

  53.          announcement.  It says the Internet is available, explains 
  54.          why this is news (first time publicly available) and also 
  55.          explains how to access the BBS.  It also provides a "warm

  74.          release.  It states the facts with few embellishments.  The 
  75.          next news release is a bit more complicated since it starts 
  76.          with a softer lead, or beginning.  It has a "feature" feel to 
  77.          it.

  90.                   INTERNET SEMINAR SPONSORED BY APHELION BBS

  92.               Navigation of large computer networks is much like 
  93.          navigating the ocean.  It takes time, practice and 
  94.          instruction.  The Internet is, if not the largest, one the 
  95.          largest computer oceans.

  97.               Aphelion Computer Bulletin Board System is sponsoring a 
  98.          seminar designed to help computer users learn to navigate 
  99.          through the Internet.  "This seminar will focus on Electronic 
  100.          mail addressing and file transfers," according to System 
  101.          Operator Robert Parson.  More seminars dealing with other 
  102.          aspects of the Internet are planned.

  109.          computer users with modems.  E-Mail boxes are provided at no 
  110.          cost.  Other Internet services are available for a $6.00 an 
  111.          hour charge.  Modems can connect to Aphelion BBS at speeds up 
  112.          to 14,400.

  137.               The seminar news release is quite similar to the new 
  138.          product announcement in that it says what the seminar is 
  139.          about, where it will be held and why it is being held.  The 
  140.          charge for the seminar was included since it was necessary, 
  141.          but it was buried deep in the news release.

  143.               If you'll notice, both of these news releases have a 
  144.          contact name and number.  This is critically important on any 
  145.          news release.  If a media outlet can't find someone to talk 
  146.          to about a story, it will usually end up in the trash.

  163.  
  164.               The Justice Department recently warned parents to 
  165.          examine their children's electronic mail for possible signs 
  166.          of contact by child molesters.
  167.  
  168.               The System Operator of a Fort Smith Computer Bulletin 
  169.          Board says BBSs are being unfairly singled out as a source of 
  170.          this illegal activity.  Robert Parson of Aphelion BBS says 
  171.          "The Justice Department has bruised the entire BBS community 
  172.          because of a few cases."

  174.               Parson adds that as far as he knows, there has been no 
  175.          activity involving child pornography or other illegal 
  176.          activities in the Fort Smith area.  "All the Bulletin Boards 
  177.          that are in operation in Fort Smith are on the up and up.  I 
  178.          invite anyone to call any of them and look for themselves."

  205.               This is based on an actual news story from September 
  206.          1993.  The Justice Department did issue a warning to parents 
  207.          advising them to check thier children's electronic mail.  
  208.  
  209.               This news release accomplishes several things.  It 
  210.          blunts the impact of the Justice Department warning, Robert 
  211.          Parson is seen as an expert in the field, and the invitation 
  212.          to call ANY BBS could expand the user base of the BBS 
  213.          community (although Aphelion BBS will likely be the first one 
  214.          called).  You could also include a list of BBS names and 
  215.          numbers with this News Release.

  217.               The "-30-" at the end of each of these stories indicates 
  218.          that, yes, the story has come to an end.  If there were two 
  219.          pages, the first page would have a notation at the bottom of 
  220.          "-more-"

  238.          they are having a FREE seminar when I'm having my FEE-BASED 
  239.          seminar!  At the same place even!  What gall.

  241.               Anyway, that's just one form a PSA can take.  One of the 
  242.          nice things about that format is it can fit on a postcard, 
  243.          which has a lower postage rate.  But some people prefer to 
  244.          write them similar to a news story.

  283.               I am very distressed that the Justice Department raided 
  284.          and shut down Aphelion BBS yesterday as a threat to National 
  285.          Security.
  286.  
  287.               I have allowed the People's Front for the Liberation of 
  288.          Refrigerator Magnets to have a forum without fear of 
  289.          recrimination.  But as the raid proved, I was apparently 
  290.          wrong.
  291.  
  292.               Yes, the PFLRM is working toward separation from the 
  293.          Nation of Cellophane Tape.  The People's Front, though, 
  294.          should have the opportunity to have its opinions and views 
  295.          out in the open as any political party does.

  297.               As the System Operator, I have always encouraged freedom 
  298.          of speech, no matter what form that speech takes.  There have 
  299.          been times in which some users have left messages I felt were 
  300.          not just politically incorrect but downright vile.  However, 
  301.          that is what the First Amendment protects.

  303.               I am looking forward to the coming days in court and 
  304.          firmly believe that we will find that the Constitution and 
  305.          the Bill of Rights do have a place in modern society.

  313.               Obviously, the Justice Department wouldn't raid a BBS 
  314.          over something like this.  But just the same, this is an 
  315.          example of Crisis Management.  It is a firm statement made at 
  316.          a News Conference, and an invitation that representatives of 
  317.          the BBS are open to meet with members of the media.

  335.               Should you be raided, you normally won't have a News 
  336.          Conference.  The judge would probably place you under a "gag" 
  337.          order, which prohibits you from talking publicly about the 
  338.          case, or you would be advised by your attorney not to say 
  339.          anything.
